RETURN TO PACHA MAMA

Return to Pachamama – Lectures on Bolivian Mother Earth Law

Lecturer: Prof. dr. Manuel Hurtado Duran SJ (Bolivian Catholic University, Cochabamba)

The Posticum Centre for Spirituality, Culture and Dialogue (Oradea, Romania) proudly invites the honorable public to attend a series of special lectures on Bolivian Mother Earth Law.
The Plurinational Assembly of Bolivia in 2010 ratified the Law on the Rights of Mother Earth (Pachamama). It was an absolute world premiere when this act considered the Earth an organic wholeness consisted of interrelated living systems, and subject of rights. The uniqueness of the Bolivian approach was that it handled human communities as parts of this integrity, not as hierarchically superimposed entities. Another essential novelty of the act is the sacred character borrowed to Mother Earth. The message of this issue is, that our lifestyle, consumer customs, economic and social behavior must be guided by the fact, that we are a part of a sacral cosmic totality. Considering the analogous European or North-American juridical initiatives and the pressing environmental crisis, no one can contest the actuality of such initiatives.

The language of lectures is English. Translation to Hungarian and Romanian will be provided.

Topics:
• The content of the Mother Earth Law
• the origins of the act
• the indigenous social and cultural background of the law
• critics and challenges
• theological and cultural reflections

“She is sacred, fertile and the source of life that feeds and cares for all living beings in her womb. She is in permanent balance, harmony and communication with the cosmos. She is comprised of all ecosystems and living beings, and their self-organization.” (Alvaro García Linera, Vice President of Bolivia)
